What is Phishing?

A scam message pretending to be someone you trust, designed to trick you into revealing passwords, paying money, or clicking a harmful link.

Phishing arrives by email, text (then called 'smishing'), phone, or social media, and imitates banks, delivery companies, government offices, or even family members. The tell-tale signs are urgency, requests for secret codes or payment, and links that don't quite match the real address. The golden rule: never log in or pay through a link in an unexpected message — go to the organisation directly instead.
