What is HTTPS?

The secure version of a web connection, shown by a padlock in your browser. It encrypts data between you and the website.

HTTPS means others on the network — including on public Wi-Fi — cannot read what you send to a website, such as passwords or card numbers. Before entering anything sensitive, check the address starts with https:// . Note that the padlock proves the connection is private, not that the site itself is honest: scam sites can use HTTPS too, so still check the address is the genuine one.
