Secure your home Wi-Fi in five steps

Your router guards every device in the house — yet most people never touch its settings. Five quick changes close the common holes.

Everything in your home — laptops, phones, cameras, smart speakers — connects through one box. Securing it takes ten minutes, once.

1. Change the router's admin password

The password used to open the router's settings page often ships as admin/admin — and default passwords are listed openly online. Sign in to the router (address on its label) and set a strong, unique admin password.

2. Use strong Wi-Fi encryption

In the wireless settings, choose WPA3 — or WPA2 if that's the best available — and a long Wi-Fi passphrase. Never leave a network open, and replace any router that only supports the obsolete WEP.

3. Turn on automatic firmware updates

Router bugs are how devices get drafted into botnets. If your router has an auto-update option, enable it; if it hasn't been updated in years, ask your internet provider for a replacement.

4. Create a guest network

Give visitors — and smart-home gadgets — their own network. If a cheap smart plug is ever compromised, it can't reach your laptop or your files.

5. Switch off what you don't use

Features like WPS (the one-button connect) and remote management are common attack doors. Turn them off in settings unless you specifically need them.

That's it. Combined with automatic updates on your devices and two-factor logins, a locked-down router makes your home network a hard target.
